BACK TO SCHOOL

SUCCESS TIPS:

Martial Arts Builds

Academic Achievers!

Often, the time off that kids have from school in the summer is a period where they get out of the routine of school, as well as the habit of taking care of other responsibilities. When school starts again-if parents try to get their kids back into their schedules the week school begins-it often results in a power struggle. Here are some suggestions on how to avoid those power struggles-or at least, how to minimize them.

Back-to-School Routine: Start the Daily Schedule Now: Start the school schedule a week ahead of time. Write out the schedule, using it as a guideline, list the time your child will get up, have breakfast, leave for school, and what time they’ll get home, have dinner, do homework, go to Karate, and go to bed.

For children with A/D/D, Attention Deficit Disorder, and other behavioral issues, having such a plan is a must. Although they may be resistant, it’s important to stress that if your child has behavioral issues, getting into this kind of routine may very well reduce their stress and anxiety even if their initial reaction to it is negative.

It’s important for kids to know that when something is important to you as a parent, you want it to be practiced and rehearsed. There’s a difference between something being important to you as a parent and kids knowing that something is important to you as a parent.

Create a Bedtime Routine: The goal is for them to get back in the habit of a certain time period every night which is not altered with over stimulation and excitement. Be certain that you make the bedtime routine a habit, as this becomes a big sticking point at the beginning of the school year.

During the summer, your kids have most likely gotten out of the habit of going to bed at a regular time. Be forewarned that this transition may be very difficult for adolescents.

ESTABLISH A MORNING ROUTINE
Make sure that you are getting enough rest and starting EVERY morning with a healthy breakfast. Like a car, your body needs the proper fuel to perform at PEAK levels.

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING
An open mind is a learning mind. Come to school each day ready to focus, work hard and have FUN!

GREAT HOMEWORK HABITS
Have a set time that you always do homework, such as right after school. Make sure you have a quiet place away from distractions to do it. Don’t rush, and remember to ALWAYS hand it in.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Teachers are smart, but they can’t read minds. Great relationships come from great communication. Ask questions and share concerns!

SHARE AT HOME
One of the best ways to learn is to teach. Try to teach your parents something you’ve learned in school each day. It will help you and maybe your parents will learn something new!

SUPERSTAR STUDY HABITS
School is like your favorite sport. Proper practice and preparation promotes PEAK performance. To become a superstar, prepare like one.

GUARD YOUR INNER CIRCLE
Surround yourself with the right people. Who you surround yourself with… you become! Having friends that are positive and achievement-oriented like you will keep you on the fast track to success!
